2 Peckinpah, Sam
1925-1984Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. 4 Walsh, Raoul
1887-1980Nacido en Nueva York el 11 de marzo de 1887, los primeros anos de la vida de Raoul Walsh son oscuros. Lo encontramos ya, sin duda, en 1907 como actor de la version teatral de “The Clansman”, novela de Thomas Dixon que inspirarara a David W. Griffith su celebre pelicula El nacimiento de una nacion (The Birth of a Nation, 1915). Despues de la correspondiente gira, de vuelta ya en su ciudad natal, continua con su carrera de actor que, entre otros logros, lo lleva a interpretar, a las ordenes de Griffith, el papel de John Wilkes Booth, asesino del presidente Lincoln, en El nacimiento de una nacion. Ya antes, en 1914, habia empezado a dirigir bajo la supervision del propio Griffith.Su primer largometraje, co-realizado por Christy Cabanne, es Life of Villa (1915), pero sus dos peliculas mudas mas famosas son, sin discusion, The Thief of Bagdad (El ladron de Bagdad, 1924), deslumbrante espectaculo visual ro dado para la productora de su protagonista, Douglas Fairbanks, y La fragil voluntad (Sadie Thompson, 1928), melodrama a la medida de su protagonista, Gloria Swanson, que produjo el filme. Hasta entonces, albores ya del sonoro, Walsh no habia prestado una atencion especial al western. Lo hizo de inmediato, como muestran sus primeros filmes sonoros del genero, En el viejo Ari zona (In Old Arizona, 1929), que fue el primero de una larga lista con el Cisco Kid como protagonista, y La gran jornada (The Big Trail, 1930), de larga duracion y largo presupuesto. Precisamente durante el rodaje de la primera de las dos peliculas citadas perdio un ojo en un accidente, por lo que tuvo que ser sustituido por Warner Baxter como protagonista de la pelicula, y auxiliado por Irving Cummings en la direccion. En la Fox entre 1929 y 1935, en la Paramount hasta 1939 y en lo sucesivo en Warner Bros, Raoul Walsh ira consolidando su categoria como realizador hasta 1964, ano de estreno de su ultima pelicula, precisamente un western, hermoso y testimonial.Aunque sus habilidades como creador cinematografico tienen mas largo alcance que el que se limita al western, dejemos constancia de que, con toda probabilidad, es en este genero donde consigue sus mejores obras, sencillas, serenas, con un importante sentido de la narracion en imagenes. Como caso curioso, hay que indicar que Walsh hizo un remake de dos de sus peliculas, El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, 1941), dura historia de gangsters inscrita de lleno en el genero negro que convirtio en una estrella a Humphrey Bogart, y Objetivo Birmania (Objective Burma!, 1945), filme belico. Ambos remakes los realizo en clave de western: Juntos hasta la muerte (Colorado Territory, 1949) y Tam bores lejanos (Distant Drums, 1951), respectivamente. Algo indica este detalle sobre su “aficion” al genero. 1899-1951Nacido en Jersey City, New Jersey, inicialmente trabaja como ayudante de fotografia y de direccion, pero en 1932 lo encontramos ya dirigiendo su primera pelicula, The Death Kiss, un producto tipico de cine de misterio, realizado para Tiffany, precursor de al menos otra decena de filmes de caracteristicas similares, todos ellos igualmente honestos, dirigidos por Marin. Este genero (o subgenero, si se quiere) y el western seran los que mejor se adapten a la personalidad del realizador, habil en la creacion de ambientes, solido en el desarrollo dramatico de sus filmes y, en resumen, honrado profesional, particularmente interesante en el mundo del western, en el que consigue peliculas llenas de vigor narrativo, muy por encima de la media de la epoca. Especialmente atractivos son sus filmes con el actor Randolph Scott, rodados entre 1949 y 1951, primero para 20th Century-Fox y luego para Warner Bros. 1919-1989Nacido en Berlin, en 1938 emigra a los Estados Unidos con su familia. Tuvo al principio algunas dificultades para hacerse un sitio en el mundo del cine, en el que empezo como ayudante de direccion en Monogram. Ya en Fox ascendio a la categoria de productor asociado y consigue, en 1955, realizar su primera pelicula, Un beso antes de morir (A Kiss Before Dying), que es distribuida por United Artists. Se mueve, por lo general, con presupuestos ajustados, pero cuando no lo hace tampoco por ello se ven favorecidos sus filmes. Dirige un buen punado de episodios de series de television, y tambien algun largometraje en Alemania. Es hijo del tambien realizador Richard Oswald. Nacido en Filadelfia, la separacion de sus padres le llevo a pasar las primeras etapas de su vida en compania de su madre y de su hermano Irving, que con el tiempo seria un reputado fotografo. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, intenta la aventura teatral en la compania de Joshua Logan. Toma la decision de adquirir una formacion rigurosa, lo que le hace interrumpir su actividad teatral y estudiar en el Black Mountain College, en Carolina del Norte, y, mas tarde, en las universidades de Perugia y Florencia. En 1948 pasa por el Actor’s Studio hasta que consigue introducirse en la cadena de television NBC, en trabajos subalternos. Pronto escribe guiones y dirige. Obtiene un gran exito en 1956 con la obra The Miracle Worker, que para el sera una especie de talisman, ya que volvio a dirigirla en Broadway en 1959 y en cine en 1962.Abiertas las puertas de este medio, dirige su primera pelicula, que sera tambien su primer western, El zurdo, que dio a conocer a un director que tenia mucho que decir en la pantalla grande. El Milagro de Ana Sullivan (The Miracle Worker, 1962), La jauria humana (The Chase, 1966) y Bonnie and Clyde (1967) certificaron el valor intrinseco del cineasta, que logro nuevos parabienes con su segundo e iconoclasta western, Pequeno gran hombre. A mi juicio, Arthur Penn es autor de una obra coherente, de notable valor aunque con algunos altibajos. Hoy, sin embargo, parece algo olvidado, por lo que parece oportuno resenar que sus peliculas, y en particular sus tres westerns, forman parte de lo mas granado de la produccion norteamericana “postclasica”, esa que empieza a abrirse camino desde los ultimos anos 50.The Left Handed Gun (El zurdo). 1958. 102 minutos. 1934Nacido en Lafayette, Indiana, estudia interpretacion en Nueva York. Actor de television, en los anos 60 se convierte en director y productor en ese mismo medio. Es contratado por Paramount en 1965. No ha dejado de hacer peliculas desde entonces, y en los ultimos tiempos parece haber retomado, aunque timidamente, su faceta de actor, en peliculas como Maridos y mujeres (Husbands and Wives, Woody Allen, 1992) o Eyes Wide Shut (Eyes Wide Shut, Stan ley Kubrick, 1999).La filmografia de Pollack como director de cine es irregular. Peca, por lo general, de pretencioso y ambiguo. Parece moverse mejor en los filmes de accion que en aquellos en los que solo intervienen sentimientos personales. Obtuvo resonantes exitos con Tal como eramos (The Way We Were, 1973), Tootsie (Tootsie, 1982) y Memorias de Africa (Out of Africa, 1985), por la que logro el Oscar de la Acade mia, pero tambien algun que otro inesperado fracaso. Su mejor pelicula, en un juicio estrictamente personal, es The Yakuza (Yakuza, 1974), en la que consigue acertar con las claves narrativas de la historia que tiene entre manos. 13 Thomas, Ralph
1915-2001Hermano de Gerald Thomas. Empieza en el cine con el honroso oficio de manejar la claqueta en los rodajes. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial empieza a dirigir, contratado por la Rank, y alcanza algunos exitos, particularmente en el terreno de la comedia, dentro del que cabe recordar Un medico en la familia (Doctor in the House, 1954), primera de una serie de tres peliculas, cada una de ellas algo peor que la anterior. El tono desenfadado le va mejor que el so lemne, donde no consigue resultados minimamente aceptables. Eso, el exceso de gratuita solemnidad, es el lastre de este atipico western ambientado en tierras canadienses. Se debe recordar el remake dirigido por Ralph Thomas de Treinta y nueve escalones (The 39 Steps), sin duda una de las mas famosas peliculas del Hitchcock britanico. 14 Zinnemann, Fred
1907-1997Nacido en Viena, estudia leyes, pero entusiasmado por las peliculas de Sergei M. Eisenstein y de Erich Von Stroheim decide trasladarse a Paris a aprender la nueva tecnologia. Trabaja en Berlin como ayudante de camara, pero de nuevo, con la llegada del sonoro, siente la necesidad de aprender esa nueva tecnica por lo que se traslada a los Estados Unidos, donde traba conocimiento con Robert Flaherty. En calidad de ayudante de Flaherty vuelve a Europa con la intencion de rodar un documental sobre Asia central. De nuevo en Norteamerica, dirige una serie de cortos para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, por uno de los cuales logra un Oscar en 1938. Su primer exito como director de largometrajes lo obtiene con The Seventh Cross (1944). Autor de uno de los westerns mas famosos de la historia del cine, la obra de este vienes transplantado a Hollywood no fue nunca, injustamente, muy apreciada por la critica, aunque algunos de sus filmes alcanzaron notoriedad, como el premiado De aqui a la eternidad (From Here to Eternity, 1953), por el que consiguio de nuevo el Oscar al mejor director, lo que hizo por tercera vez con Un hombre para la eternidad (A Man for All Sea sons, 1966). Solo ante el peligro es una pelicula que consigue una peculiar atmosfera que, sin duda, se encuentra en la base de su enorme exito. Oklahoma, por su parte, es un western musical que tiene el honor de ser el primer filme que utiliza el sistema de 70 mm llamado Todd-AO.High Noon (Solo ante el peligro). 1952. 85 minutos.
